An Exciting Week Ahead

Last Friday’s Veteran’s Day Celebration and the opening of the Fall Book Fair kicked off an eventful week for Commerce Middle School. Our school will recognize American Education Week and Bullying Awarness Week from November 14-18.

Teacher Appreciation Breakfast

Thank you to the CMS PTO for the great breakfast spread this morning! PTO officers Michelle Harold, Marsha Leffew, Doreen Hill, and Stephanie McDonald organized the Teacher Appreciation Breakfast to coincide with the opening of American Education Week. The scrumptious casseroles were prepared for us by Audrey Andrews, Tricia Massey, and Carla Pitts.

The Book Fair Boogie

The “Book Fair Boogie” is this week’s after-school dance sponsored by the PTO. The dance will take place on Wednesday, November 16 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. All students in grades 5-8 are invited to attend. Admission is $3.00 at the door. During the dance, students and parents are encouraged to visit the Book Fair. Thank you in advance to all teachers who attend the dance to assist with chaperoning. Those who attend for 30 or more minutes will receive documented comp time to be used on any duty-free and meeting-free afternoon.

Recognizing Our Teacher of the Year

Mrs. Carolee Jones, CMS Teacher of the Year, will be recognized at tonight’s Board of Education meeting. The System Teacher of the Year will be announced at this 7:00 p.m. meeting. Good luck Mrs. Jones!

Lunch and Learn Meetings Begin Tomorrow

Grade-level “lunch and learn” meetings will begin tomorrow with the 5^th grade team. All lunch and learn meetings will take place in the conference room. Weekly meeting times have been provided to all teachers. Any special break/recess plans should be communicated to the Connections teachers. Mrs. Andrews and I will provide cafeteria supervision during lunch and learn meetings, but are available to participate in the meetings as needed. Weekly lunch and learn meetings are prime time for looking at student achievement issues, sharing best practices, analyzing data, planning and problem-solving, brainstorming, setting goals, and creating action plans. Teams should submit a copy of the meeting’s notes to team members, Mrs. Andrews, and me as soon as possible after the meeting.

Teachers as Advisors – PAWS Meeting This Wednesday

Student advisory groups will meet this Wednesday at 8:50 a.m. in teacher advisor classrooms. All grade level teams should have plans in place for this meeting. Mrs. Andrews, Mrs. Pitts, and I will be visiting advisory groups to take a picture for posting outside the classroom. Members of the Advisory Design Team are requested to post activities and lessons for this week’s meeting on the school’s Q Drive.

· I believe we would all agree the timing of our fall break was dead-on. With 11 weeks of school and an SACS accreditation review behind us, we can focus on the next 20 days of teaching and learning before the Thanksgiving holidays.

· Kudos to Kim McCarty and Laura Vail for attending the Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (GCTM) Conference at Rock Eagle during our fall break. Here’s hoping the conference provided some solid takeaways to begin implementing in your classes and to share with the CMS math team.

· Mrs. Andrews and I will be working to block full-day ISS assignments into 1-2 days per week to ensure as few interruptions of paraprofessional classroom support as possible. Of course, disciplinary infractions that call for immediate ISS intervention will be handled accordingly.

· Our next round of grade-level collaboration meetings have been scheduled for the following dates:

o Grade 8 – Friday, October 28 – 7:55 a.m.

o Grade 6 – Monday, October 31 – 9:55 a.m.

o Grade 5 – Monday, October 31 – 1:55 p.m.

o Grade 7 – Wednesday, November 2 – 8:55 a.m.

Please plan to discuss the performance of your special education students as well as those receiving Tier 2 and 3 interventions. Please forward any recommended agenda items to me this week. Finalized meeting agendas will be sent to teams at least 24 hours before meeting time.

· Moodle training will be taking place this Wednesday as scheduled. Participating teachers will devote ½ day to the training and will come together again on December 13 for additional training.

· While on the topic of technology, our school is the fortunate recipient of some unanticipated Title VI, Part B funds as appropriated by the state government. · Due to lack of availability of our preferred disc jockey, this week’s PTO dance is being rescheduled for a later date.

· With November’s arrival, CMS will continue to celebrate Veteran’s Day with a school-wide program on Friday, November 11. The program will begin at 9:00 a.m. We will also celebrate November 11^th with the opening of our Fall Book Fair. The following week, November 14-18, is American Education Week and Bullying Awareness Week, with activities taking place throughout the week.

· PAWS Advisory Program – Grade-level teams will work together at our November 2 faculty meeting to plan and prepare for the November 16 meeting of our PAWS advisory groups. Mrs. Andrews (Grade 6), Mrs. Pitts (Grade 7), and I (Grade 8) will be visiting your classrooms to take your group’s picture at that next meeting. These are the pictures that will be displayed outside of your classroom along with your group’s adopted name.

Monday Minute - October 10, 2011

In the days ahead, two events stand out in their level of importance to our school and school system. We will be meeting with PAWS advisory groups for the first time on Thursday, October 13 and will host a SACS accreditation team on Tuesday, October 18. Above all else, I ask that each of us take the necessary steps to be at our best for both. Don’t hesitate to see me if I can assist you in your preparations.

SACS Interview Groups - I have shared the rosters of the interview groups who will meet with the accreditation team next Tuesday. I will meet with each group this Thursday, October 13. My meeting with the student group will be at 2:25 in the cafeteria and will conclude at 2:40. I will meet with the teacher group and Leadership Team at 3:05 in the Media Center. After discussing the interview process, the teacher group will be excused and we will finish the Leadership Team meeting agenda.

SACS Walk-Through and Classroom Observations – The finalized schedule of the accreditation team’s walk-through (8:00-8:30) and classroom observations (9:50-10:20) will be provided to all teachers on Tuesday, October 11.

Displays of Student Work - I am pleased to see exemplary student work being displayed throughout our building. In a recent meeting with other building administrators, it was discussed that the accreditation team will be looking for evidence of our school improvement efforts. Displays of exemplary student work in classrooms and hallways are not just an attempt to impress our visitors. They communicate high expectations and create a vision for our students of what quality looks like.

This Week’s Collaboration Meetings – Reading/ELA teachers will meet today at 3:05. Science teachers will meet tomorrow at 3:05, and the Social Studies meeting will take place on Wednesday at 3:05. All meetings will be held in the Media Center.

CMS Football – The CMS Tiger football team wraps up its season this Wednesday at Oglethorpe County. The team is on a roll having won every game since a season opening loss to Franklin County. Their record stands at 4-1.

Thank You – Thank you to those teachers who attended last week’s PTO meeting. We had a solid turnout of parents, and I was pleased with our guest speaker and the outcomes of the meeting. For those unable to attend, we will be holding our 5^th Annual PTO Halloween Dance from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 27. Our students have always been very well-behaved at our dances, but we can never have too many teacher chaperones.

Mock Writing Tests – We will schedule mock writing tests today for all grade levels. In addition to these mock tests, it is essential that teams work together to develop writing activities for students not only as we approach these tests, but throughout the school year. Consider this forthright quote below from Mike Schmoker: “Students in successful schools are regularly involved in writing across the curriculum. They do not use writing as a diversion from math, science, music, or physical education. Rather, they proceed with the conviction that if these subjects are worthy of thinking, then they are worthy of writing. Courses in the school that do not require students to participate in meaningful writing exercises are a disservice to the literacy development of the students and to the academic progress of the school.”

Moodle Training and an Interesting Article – Twenty-two teachers and administrators will be participating in Moodle training on October 26, and again on December 13. I am really excited about the doors this training will open for our teachers, students, and parents. Some of those participating in the training are admittedly stepping outside their “comfort zone,” and I applaud you. As Will Richardson shares in Lifelong UNlearning, traditional educational models are changing radically. All of us have a great deal to relearn and unlearn.

*All benchmark assessments should be administered by the end of this week. In our next content-area collaboration meetings will discuss, review, and reflect on the performance of your students on these assessments. If you have not already, please remember to submit a copy of your benchmark assessment(s) and answer key(s) to me this week.

*I’m hopeful all finalized adjustments have been made to each grade level’s Acceleration course rosters since last week’s collaboration/RTI meetings. Since our focus at those meetings was on general education students, I ask that you also communicate any needs with regards to our special education students. Let’s make sure that any special education student who would benefit from participation in an Acceleration class has been scheduled accordingly.

*Prior to this Wednesday’s faculty meeting, I’ll be checking in with members of the Leadership Team about their grade level’s first advisory meeting plans (grades 6-8). All teachers will be meeting with their advisory groups on Wednesday, October 12.

*More important SACS Accreditation Review information will be shared with CMS teachers, staff, parents, and students this week. All teachers should anticipate members of the review team to visit their classroom on Tuesday, October 18. As previously shared, on that same date, all interviews with the review team will take place here at CMS.

*Mrs. Andrews and I will begin doing CLASS Keys informal observations with teachers who have finished their pre-evaluation meetings and finalized their professional growth plans. At least two of these observations (unannounced) will take place during the year. We will continue the mini-observation process throughout the year.

*Please send me an email message if you are interested in participating in our upcoming Moodle training. This training is part of our school’s strategy/action plan designed to get more teachers and students using technology effectively. It will take place here at CMS (1/2 day sessions) on Wednesday, October 26 and Tuesday, December 13. Friday Focus - September 16, 2011

The first six weeks of school ends today. The fresh new school year, while still young, has seen routines and rituals established in all classes. Our school improvement goals and CRCT targets have been set, and within days students will be provided account of how they have performed in each of their classes thus far.
As our school's instructional leader, I feel it essential that I share (re-share for many) my thoughts on grading practices. At Commerce Middle School, the expectation is that grades represent a clear and accurate indicator of what a student knows and is able to do—mastery. We know the non-academic factors (e.g., effort, attendance, attitude, etc.) impact performance, but incorporating them into final grades is discouraged.
I recognize and support the professionalism of every teacher in our building and defer to your discretion in determining your manners of grading. At the same time, I strongly discourage recording zeros for work not done. Teachers using a 100-point scale who do not replace a zero with a fifty or sixty to equalize the influence of all grades earned, end up recording inaccurate grades. Once a student has crossed over into “failure,” delineating degrees of failure doesn’t help anyone, and it lessons the usefulness of the grade. The best professional article ever on the topic can be found at The Case Against the Zero.
Don't hesitate to share your thoughts on grading and assessment at next week's grade-level collaboration meetings.
--The window for posting six weeks grades is open. Report cards will be issued next week and the Counselor Watch lists will be updated. Student failure rate data will be shared with everyone as it become available.
--As we begin a new six weeks grading period, we must continue to monitor the academic progress of all CMS students. Please encourage students to participate in before and after school tutoring, and work within your teams to make optimal use of guided study time.
--All grade level teams should be reviewing the rosters of students in Acceleration classes and preparing to make recommendations on who would benefit from the additional time and support in Reading/ELA or Math. Please communicate with the Acceleration teacher at your grade level regularly to let him/her know who, what, when, and how he/she can help move students forward in your current units of study.
--This year’s first meeting of the Commerce Middle School PTO will take place on Tuesday, October 4 at 7:00 in the cafeteria. All teachers are invited to join the PTO and participate in the organization's activities. The mission of our PTO is to enhance the education of the Commerce Middle School students by promoting understanding among students, parents, faculty and administration, and the community.

Math Hits the Pavement at CMS

Math has received a stigma over time and there are even adults who can’t stand thinking about math. How do educators and administrators decrease the negative stigma associated with math? At Commerce Middle School, we talk about making math relevant and engaging. Mr. Friend's eighth grade math students were engaged and learning today about multiplying and dividing radicals. It was a great day for math to "hit the pavement" at CMS.

These young ladies proclaim, "Problem solved."

Monday Minute - August 29, 2011

Week Four is upon us. I continue to be impressed with the strong focus on learning visible throughout our building. In celebration, this Friday morning, we will have an “Another Great Week” get-together with coffee, juice, and breakfast snacks in the Media Center from 7:10 to 7:40. Please plan to stop by and enjoy the food and fellowship.

With our fourth week, it is essential that all general and special education teachers are familiar with the testing accommodations required by their students' IEPs. Throughout the school year, the accommodations should be implemented in the manner prescribed by the IEP. If you have concerns about a student's testing accommodations, now is the time to act. We do not want to be scrambling in the weeks before CRCT trying to do what we should have done in August or September.

I am in the process of submitting everyone's 2011-12 curriculum maps to Dr. Tolbert. Thank you for your work on these important planning documents.

Mrs. Andrews and I will begin scheduling CLASS Keys Professional Growth Plan (PGP) meetings this week. The meetings will begin upon our return from the Labor Day three-day weekend. Please use your self-assessment and other reflective information/data to determine the 2-3 goals you will pursue this year.

By Wednesday, August 31, each grade level team should submit a name for the August Student of the Month awards to Tiffany Davis. The criteria that teams are asked to use to select the Student of the Month include: Completes academic assignments in responsible and conscientious manner, respects staff and peers, participates constructively in class activities, demonstrates positive behavior, and acts as a role model (as well as any other qualities that would make the student deserving of the recognition). Our students of the month are not only our highest achievers, but are our model citizens working to be the best they can be.

The CMS Lady Tiger softball team plays at home this Tuesday against Prince Avenue at 4:30.

Our School's Professional Learning Community

I'm often reluctant to use the term Professional Learning Community to describe our school's collaborative culture. According to Richard DuFour, the term has become so prevalent in contemporary "educationese" it is in danger of losing all meaning. I am proud though that our school can be recognized as a real champion of the PLC process. The ongoing commitment of our educational team includes a simple and straight-forward focus on learning, collaboration, and results orientation. We function under the belief that the key to improving learning for students is "continuous, job-embedded learning for educators." Many of our school's most significant achievements of the last four years can be traced to another key element of our professional learning community: The willingness to persist!

Following one of our grade-level collaboration meetings last week, I reflected on some of our discussions about the challenges faced in the coming school year. I saw some concerned looks on faces as we reviewed performance data and set targets for 2011-12, but I never doubted the determination and belief that our students and staff will make this their best year ever. I never doubted their belief in the power of collaboration and teamwork.

Amazingly, I read a blog post later that afternoon that brought it all into focus for me. In A Vision of Shared Leadership, Justin Tarte shares that when educators look outside their own sphere of influence, they create a major barrier to improving their school. He states, "Effective team leaders do not look outside the window waiting for someone else to improve their situation - they look in the mirror. They demonstrate their belief that the collective actions of the members of the team can have a significant, positive impact on results." This belief enables them to rally rather than retreat, and stay the course even when faced with setbacks.

Amen, Justin! At Commerce Middle School, the successes we have experienced through our collaborative efforts have built in us a strong self-efficacy and a belief that our continued persistence in the most difficult of times will ensure many more successes to come.

Monday Minute - August 15, 2011

Week 1 of the 2011-12 school year is behind us and it was all we could have asked for and more. As a school, we always want to take every step possible to ensure a smooth start, and it was an amazingly positive and productive week. With a redesigned faculty (1 of every 4 certificated employees is new to CMS) and over 140 new students, change and newness was in the air. Our faculty/staff includes 9 new educators and a new school bookkeeper. This very distinguished group of educators includes:

Teachers are building their classroom cultures and not wasting a minute moving into the teaching and learning process. It is a very exciting time to be a Commerce Middle School Tiger!

--Thank you for all the positive feedback we have received from parents and guardians on the implementation of our new traffic plan. After working through some of the typical first day challenges, we have gotten improved results daily. Most importantly, our students are safer than ever during those hectic times before and after school. A huge thank you goes out to Officers Max Briggs and Jeff Rogers for developing and overseeing this entire process. If you have any questions about the new traffic plan, please feel free to contact any of us.

--The athletics program at our school this year is being led by new Athletic Director Derrick Davis. Coach Davis is working with Commerce High School Athletic Director Donnie Drew to coordinate and oversee all aspects of the program. As a lifelong Commerce Tiger, Coach Davis understands and will build upon and promote our "commitment to excellence." He is currently updating athletic program information at CMS Athletics.

--The girls softball team will open its home schedule this Thursday, August 18 at 5:00 p.m. against George Walton. Come out and cheer the Tigers to victory!

--All CMS sixth graders will participate in ITBS testing this week between August 16 and August 18. Additionally, sixth graders will be administered the CogAT test on Tuesday, August 23. Sixth grade parents/guardians should have received an informational letter regarding these tests. Please contact the school if you have any questions.

--Collaboration Meetings this week: The 8th grade teaching team will meet on Wednesday, August 17 at 8:00 a.m. and the 7th grade team will meet on Thursday, August 18 at 9:00 a.m.

--Carol Streetman Photography will be taking student and faculty pictures on Wednesday, August 24. Don't forget to dress for the occasion.

--One parent member position on the CMS School Council has opened for a two-year term beginning this school year. Please contact the school if you wish to be included on the election ballot or wish to nominate another parent. Nomination information will be shared with all parents/guardians this month.

--Technology Tidbit: Pegby is a great website for organizing the tasks that you and or your team need to get done. Pegby is set up like a corkboard with index cards stuck to it. The corkboard has three columns to place your index cards on. A column for things to do, a column for things in progress, and a column for things that are done. Each of index card can be assigned to a person, can have files attached to it, and can have due dates assigned to it. You can use Pegby as an individual or you can share your corkboard with others.

Congratulations Mrs. Maddox and New CMS Staff!

   On behalf of the staff and students of Commerce Middle School, I would like to extend congratulations to Mrs. Lisa Maddox, our school's outstanding assistant principal. At last night's Board of Education meeting, Mrs. Maddox was recommended and approved to be the new principal at Commerce Primary School. Also on behalf of our staff and students, I would like to express thanks and appreciation to CPS principal Kim Savage for her many years of service to Commerce City Schools.
   Mrs. Maddox brings a wealth of educational experience into her new position. Since 1987, Mrs. Maddox has served as a teacher, coach, guidance counselor, and assistant principal in Commerce City Schools. Her work as guidance counselor and assistant principal at CMS has been a key ingredient to the school's many successes.
   Commerce Middle School is also pleased to announce the approval of three new members to its educational team for the 2011-2012 school year. Mrs. Jerbundy Mullis will return to CMS and teach special education. Mrs. Tiffany Davis comes to our school from Banks County Primary School and will serve as our Library Media Specialist. Mr. Rigoberto Sandoval was also approved as a school custodian. Congratulations to all!

The completion of an annual parent perception survey helps us as we focus on critical school improvement needs. The 10-question, multiple choice survey will take no longer than a few minutes to complete. 2011 CRCT Countdown to Success Slideshow

2011 CRCT Countdown to Success

A Pulse Check on Student Performance Before the 2011 CRCT

Beginning on Tuesday, April 19, our students will be taking the 2011 Georgia Criterion-Referenced (CRCT) Tests. Throughout the school year, we have provided all readers of The Principal's Page - News and Views with up-to-date results of our students' performance on benchmark assessments. Our school uses these assessments to determine how much — if any — progress is being made in student mastery of the content standards in each subject area (and each grade level). The data generated during the school year also assists us in monitoring the achievement of student subgroups and make strategic decisions about supporting learning.

In late March, our students completed the last of this year's benchmark assessments. The assessments included all of the course content taught and learned during this school year. In effect, these were Mock CRCTs for our students. Below is the data generated from our students' performance on these Mock CRCTs and some general reflections connected with the overall performance. The 4th Annual Academic Olympics at Commerce Middle School

Commerce Middle School's "CRCT Countdown to Success" is a six-week action plan of strategies and actions the school undertakes to ensure students are well-prepared for their state tests. Each year, the plan always includes an event known as the Academic Olympics. The Academic Olympics are planned and coordinated by Physical Education Teacher Tonya Ladd. They combine fun, physical activity and learning into a series of relay events. According to Principal Chuck Bell, "There is an ongoing concentration on testing in our school and we sincerely believe the Academic Olympics give our students a chance to relax, play, and have a good time when they really need it. Our students love the competition and our teachers appreciate the fact that important learning takes place during the Academic Olympics." The Academic Olympics continue tomorrow and winning teams will be announced for each grade level.

CRCT Prep Night and Online Resources

All Commerce Middle School parents, guardians, and students are invited to attend CRCT Prep Night on Tuesday, March 22 at 7:00 in the cafeteria. This event promises to be both fun and informative for all who attend. Parents and students will work together to answer CRCT questions and will have many opportunities to learn more about how to be successful on these state tests.

We have a number of resources that will be provided to everyone attending CRCT Prep Night. The links below provide you some of the kinds of information and practice test items that will be shared.

With only 14 school days remaining until testing, we look forward to a strong turnout of parents and students at this event. Georgia Department of Education CRCT Study Guides - Comprehensive study guides for all grades. These study guides are a must for all students taking the CRCTs.
Online Assessment System - The Online Assessment System (formerly known as the CRCT Online System) enables students to access tests that consist of the same kinds of questions as appear on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT).
USATestprep - USATestprep is a program that covers the fundamentals of the Georgia Middle School CRCT test in an easy-to-use interactive online format. Commerce Middle School has a current subscription in 7th Grade Reading, 8th Grade Reading, 8th Grade Language Arts, and 8th Grade Math. Students in these classes should have a username and password to access the program anywhere with online access.
Test Taking Tips - This site contains good, sound test-taking advice from a school counselor. For CRCT purposes, focus on the multiple choice question tips.
Taking the Stress Out of Standardized Tests - This site offers practical solutions to teachers who wish to lessen the stress faced by students taking standardized tests. The ideas may also be helpful to parents with children who suffer from test anxiety.

CMS Students at the World of Coke in Atlanta

Over 2,000 National Family Career Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members from across the state visited the state capitol building during National FCCLA Week, Feb. 6 - 12. Members had the chance to visit their local legislators and network with other FCCLA members.

On Thursday February 10^th students from Commerce Middle School and Commerce High School attended the annual event. Students met and had a brief question and answer session with State Representative Tommy Benton and State Senator Frank Ginn. After the tour of the Capital students participated in a tour of the World of Coke in Downtown Atlanta. Thank you to Ms. Stephanie Traylor and Mrs. Christy Epps for sponsoring our students on this fun-filled day of learning.

Improving student outcomes and closing achievement gaps takes time and continuous focus. Teachers, administrators, parents, and community members need a way to monitor how much — if any — progress is being made in their schools before the results show up in indicators like state test scores. Test scores and many of the other data currently collected come too late. They measure failure after the fact, rather than informing action and intervention that could have prevented failure.

Commerce Middle School uses benchmark assessment data generated during the school year to monitor the achievement of student subgroups and make strategic decisions about supporting learning. Members of FCCLA develop skills for life through character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communications, practical knowledge and career preparation.

This week our school is celebrating FCCLA Week with schools across the nation. The CMS FCCLA chapter is involved in many activities this week including creating candy grams for the Children's Miracle Network fund-raiser, hosting a breakfast for club members, celebrating T-Shirt Day, and ending the week by attending FCCLA Day at the Capital. Benchmark Assessments to be administered December 6-9

Commerce Middle School administers benchmark assessments three times during the school year. The second set of assessments will be taken by students between Monday, December 6 and Thursday, December 9. The benchmarks provide students important feedback about their academic progress. The results also inform teachers and staff of the progress of individual students and classes, and prompt them to adjust teaching and learning strategies as needed.

Next week's testing schedule is:

Our faculty continually challenge students to excellence on these important assessments. Friday Focus - A Message of Thanksgiving

This is a special time of the year at any middle school, but perhaps even more so here at Commerce Middle School. The spirit of the season really began here with our November 11 Veterans Day Celebration. It gave us all a chance to stop and reflect and think about what is really important to us.

In this season of Thanksgiving, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to our faculty and staff. We are privileged to have a group of professionals who share a commitment to providing the best of learning opportunities for all students. The skills and talents of our staff are given freely in order to meet the many needs of our students. In addition to our multi-talented staff, Commerce also has a special group of parents who contribute greatly to the success of our school. Thank you for the many hours that you volunteer both here and at home working together to make our school a unique place of learning. Finally, I want to say thanks to our incredible students. I am extremely proud of the high level of respect and responsibility that you show every day, and for the efforts you put forth toward academic growth and achievement.

The enduring image of the Thanksgiving holiday is of the extended family gathered around a large table strewn with wonderful foods including the traditional turkey. It is a beautiful picture, but not one that will be experienced by many families this year. Let us keep those less fortunate individuals and families in our thoughts and prayers. In reaching out to those in need, each of us has something to give. The truest way to observe the season is as a celebration of service, and a commitment to lend a hand to lift up your neighbors and your community.

Finally, let us also take a moment to express our appreciation for the men and women in uniform, serving both at home and abroad, who have volunteered to sacrifice time with their families to serve our nation and provide a blanket of safety to all of us.

Parent Days a Great Success at CMS

As part of its celebration of American Education Week, Commerce Middle School invited parents to attend classes with their students on Tuesday, November 16 and/or Wednesday, November 17. I am pleased to share that 73 parent visits took place during our two "Parent Days." It is our hope that parents left our building with a greater awareness of a day in the life of a middle school student, and with an understanding that Commerce Middle School will consistently welcome parents into the school. We are excited about the active role so many of our parents are taking in the lives of their children, and appreciative of the support and assistance they provide us in our school improvement processes.

Early November is always a busy time at Commerce Middle School. We are excited to be hosting our 5th Annual Veterans Day Celebration this Thursday, November 11 at 9:00 a.m. Representative Tommy Benton is this year's distinguished speaker at the ceremony. A reception honoring veterans and their families will follow the program in the Media Center.

A Dinners for Dollars fund-raiser is also scheduled for this Thursday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the KFC/Taco Bell in Jefferson. Ten percent of the proceeds will go to support our Lindsay's Legacy mentoring program.

American Education Week begins at Commerce Middle School next Monday, November 15. The CMS PTO will hold a Teacher Appreciation Breakfast for all teachers and staff in the Media Center that morning from 7:00 a.m. until 7:40. Tuesday, November 16 and Wednesday, November 17 are Parent Days in which all parents/guardians are invited to attend classes with their students for some or all of the school day. All parents/guardians should check in and check out through the school's main office.

The Commerce Middle School Council will be meeting in the Media Center on Monday, November 15 at 6:00 p.m. Please contact Principal Chuck Bell if you wish to serve as a parent or business representative on the Council. One parent representative and two business representatives will be elected to two-year terms at the November 15 meeting. Council meetings are open meetings and anyone in our school community is invited to attend.

Science Day will take place in all CMS classes on Friday, November 19. During Science Day, teachers of all content areas devote the opening minutes of each of their classes to a scientific activity. Some examples of these activities include Pretzel Puzzles, What's a Watershed, Screaming Balloon, The Drowning Candle, Fingerprinting, Seashell Supersort, Kitchen Chemistry, and more. Science Day promises to be full of fun and learning.

Mock Writing Tests will be administered in our 5th Grade (November 18) and 8th Grade (November 12) Language Arts classes in the coming days. These tests are an excellent opportunity for our students as they work on the writing process in preparation for state tests in January (8th Grade) and March (5th Grade).

Content-area collaboration meetings will be taking place on the following dates: November 10 (English/Language Arts), November 11 (Math), November 16 (Reading), and November 18 (Social Studies and Science)

I believe we all know the precious nature of our instructional time. Out of interest I checked to find that today is Day 60 of our 170-day instructional year. We have 25 school days before the Winter Break and a total of 88 school days before the 2011 CRCT Reading Test is administered. I would never prescribe counting every hour in the day, but I strongly endorse making every hour in the day count.

Our next round of benchmark assessments will be administered between December 6 and 10. The results of our first benchmarks have been posted on the CMS Balanced Scorecard. Per content area, the aggregate total percentage of CMS students who met and exceeded standards on these tests were:
Reading - 84.75% English/Language Arts - 95% Math - 86.5% Science - 90.5% Social Studies - 92.75%

At this meeting, elections will take place to install two new business members and one new parent member. Nominations for these positions are open through Monday, November 8. The annual Veterans Day Celebration at Commerce Middle School will be held on Thursday, November 11 at 9:00 a.m. in the school’s gymnasium. The celebration is a school-wide salute to our military, those who have served in the past, and those who are currently serving across the globe. In particular, the school wishes to salute the thousands of soldiers who have perished or been wounded in the current war on terror in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

All Commerce Middle School students and staff will be present at the ceremony, and all local veterans and interested members of the community are invited to attend. Georgia Representative Tommy Benton (District 31) is this year’s guest speaker. All servicemen in attendance will be recognized, as will each of the student winners of the Veterans Day essay contest. A reception will follow the program in which all servicemen and families are invited to participate.

Oliver Wendall Holmes said, "I find the important thing in life is not where we are, but in what direction we are moving." We are at a point in the school year where we have settled into established routines, but remain focused on the challenges ahead. Our first benchmark assessment has been administered and in less than three weeks report cards will be issued for the second grading period. An important part of our "Standard of Performance" at Commerce Middle School is maintaining an ongoing level of concentration and focus that is abnormally high. Achieving this standard is not easy, but it ensures we perform at the highest level day in and day out. Thank you to every member of our educational team for your willingness to go the extra distance for our school. You are an amazing team of educators.

Our commitment to teaching and learning must always be accompanied by a desire to increase our own expertise. In addition to promoting open communication with News and Views, it will always be my goal to share ideas and resources that promote our professional learning and growth. Late last week, finalized CRCT student performance data was posted by the Georgia Department of Education and all Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) reports were certified by school principals. At tomorrow night's PTO meeting, I will share the data and announce our school's 2010-2011 AYP status.

Infinite Campus - The grading window for 2nd Six Weeks Progress Reports will open on Thursday, September 30 and close at 4:00 p.m. on October 11.

School Calendar - Please forward me any meeting or event dates for the month of October by September 30. I will immediately post them on the School Activities Calendar.

Benchmark assessment results will be reviewed and discussed in collaborative meetings on the dates listed below. All meetings will begin at 3:05 p.m., except Social Studies which begins at 7:00 a.m. At these meetings, we will also use one of the "Learning from Student Work" protocols to look at an assignment/activity from Mrs. Hanley, Mr. Reynolds, Mr. Rob Brown, and Mr. Bagwell.

Friday Focus - One Step at a Time

From a leadership perspective, if there is one thing I’ve learned about integrating technology into teaching and learning processes and into the overall school culture, it is that it can’t be force-fed. Technology integration is really no different than classroom instruction...a one-size-fits-all approach does not work. We all move at our own pace in our learning, whether it is technology-related or not. I have also discovered that educators who seldom used technology discover that once they begin using it effectively (and seeing results), they soon find more time to use it (and do other things).

I decided to devote this Friday Focus to sharing some excellent resources that I’ve discovered recently. I hope one or more of them may find a spot in your teacher toolbox. The girls softball team finished their regular season this Tuesday with an 8-4 victory over White County. It was the last regular season game and an important win. The win put the team in second place going into the end of the season tournament scheduled for Saturday, September 18 here in Commerce. The Tigers will play Prince Avenue at 9:00 a.m. Hope to see you there!

The first six weeks of the school year came to a close today. During these first 30 days, our faculty and staff have set the tone for a very successful school year. Kudos also to our students who truly are among the best and brightest in Georgia. With an unwavering level of concentration and focus on teaching and learning, more successes await us in 2010-2011.

The voting deadline for Windstream's Classroom Connections "Spirit Awards" was Tuesday, September 7. We can all be very pleased to know that our efforts of these past few months have paid off. Commerce Middle School is one of ten schools nationwide to win a $5000 Spirit Award grant. A special thank you to Kathy Cobb for her ongoing efforts to keep us "focused on the prize."

While we are talking about dollars, I remind you that this Wednesday, September 15, our Fund-Raising Kick Off Rally will take place in the gymnasium at 10:00 a.m. Jesse Kinney will return to coordinate the fund-raiser, and his theme this year is, "Peace, Love, and Fund Raising." Teachers and staff who dress in 60s-70s garb for the rally will qualify to win a certificate for dinner at one of the area's fine restaurants.

Faculty members from Haymon Morris Middle School will be here on September 14 to observe some of our classes using a new observation tool being introduced in Barrow County Schools. Thank you to those teachers who will be opening their classrooms to these visitors.

Report cards will be issued to students in their last period class on Wednesday, September 15.

A copy of the Early Release Day schedule has been emailed to all teachers and staff. All classes, including Connections classes, will meet for 30 minutes on September 20 and 21. Collaboration and job-embedded professional learning will take place from 1:00 until 3:00 on these days. Teachers and staff may leave campus between 11:40 and 12:30 to get lunch. It is essential that if a teacher or staff member has to leave the grounds any other time during the Early Release Days that an administrator be notified.

As our fifth grade science teacher, Mrs. Hutto has had a significant impact on many student lives. Described as a "dedicated and passionate teacher," her students are among the highest achieving fifth grade science students in the state. Welcome back from what I hope was a great Labor Day weekend.

Please make sure to submit your Teacher of the Year ballot to Dannette Flint or Debbie Crawford before noon today.
I will send all teachers and staff a finalized version of the 2010-2011 School Improvement Plan and Balanced Scorecard today. Please review these documents and be prepared to discuss them at our September 8 faculty meeting.
Sixth grade vision and hearing screening will take place this Wednesday and Thursday.
CLASS Keys Pre-Evaluation Phase meetings begin this week. Professional growth plans will be reviewed and discussed at these meetings.
This year’s first meeting of the Commerce Middle School PTO will take place on Tuesday, September 28 at 7:00 in the cafeteria. All teachers are invited to join the PTO and participate in the PTO activities. The mission of our PTO is to enhance the education of the Commerce Middle School students by promoting understanding among students, parents, faculty and administration, and the community. I sincerely hope that we will have meaningful participation by our faculty and staff in PTO activities this year.
Our fifth and eighth grade teams should begin thinking about when they wish to administer mock writing tests to students at each of those grade levels this year. All fifth, sixth, and seventh grade students will participate in a mock writing test during the 8th Grade Writing Assessment on January 19, 2011.
As we continue to monitor the academic progress of our students, please encourage students to participate in before and after school tutoring, and work within your teams to make optimal use of guided study time.

Friday Focus - August 27, 2010

The Friday Focus is a means of sharing ideas, strategies, and thoughts related to improving student achievement or achieving excellence in our professional lives. This week, the Focus will be used for the purpose of sharing some important information and updates.

Please post a reminder to check the CMS Activities Calendar regularly. Events, activities, and meetings are being added quite frequently this time of the year. It is also not uncommon for us to have to change or reschedule activities. Almost always, those changes are immediately updated on the electronic calendar. Please let me know anytime you would like an activity added, regardless of whether it is next week or three months away.

Supplemental planning time is being provided to all co-teaching teams next Wednesday, September 1. Please plan accordingly as some classes will be covered by teachers or paraprofessionals.

All CMS students will participate in taking universal screening assessments in Reading/ELA and Math in the coming weeks. The data we gain from these screeners is critical to our Response-to-Intervention process. The Reading/ELA screener has been developed by Classworks and will be administered in Reading classes on September 2 (Grade 6), September 3 (Grade 8), September 9 (Grade 5), and September 10 (Grade 7). Next week, I will provide more information on the universal screening assessments in Math.

Complex plans and difficult problems are best addressed by teams. We accomplished a great deal at yesterday's English/Language Arts collaboration meeting. Two decisions impact all subject areas.

Students who have been assigned Guided Study must report to Guided Study even if they are slated to report to Acceleration on that day. It is critical that CMS students continue to understand that not doing an assignment or not meeting a certain standard of quality on an assignment (or assessment) is not an option at our school. Please communicate with Ms. McCarty, Ms. Rettenmaier, and Ms. Vail to ensure Acceleration students are reporting to Guided Study when assigned.
Due to the lost instructional days associated with our 170-day school year (for students), we will not require teachers to conduct benchmark assessments during the month of February. Instead, we will move Mock CRCT tests up one week. Those mock test will be administered from March 16-22. I will update the calendar today.

Monday Minute - August 23, 2010

I participated in an informational webinar this morning on the new CRCT-M. This modified version of the CRCT is for "the small group of students whose disability precludes them from achieving grade-level proficiency in the same time frame as other students." The CRCT-M will cover the same grade-level content as the general assessment, with modified expectations for content mastery. No more than two (2) percent of the school system's special education students in grades 3-8 may qualify to participate in the CRCT-M. The modified versions will be offered in Reading, English Language Arts, and Mathematics. There are no current plans to develop modifed versions of the CRCT for science and social studies. This is a long overdue step in the right direction for special education students who have been persistent low performers on the CRCT. Our instructional and test-preparation approaches with students targeted for the CRCT-M will not be altered. We will have further discussion about the CRCT-M in our collaborative meetings.
Entering our third week of school, it is essential that all general and special education teachers are familiar with the testing accommodations required by their students' IEPs. Throughout the school year, the accommodations should be implemented in the manner prescribed by the IEP. If you have concerns about a student's testing accommodations, now is the time to act. We do not want to be scrambling in the weeks before CRCT trying to do what we should have done in August or September. It is true that, "Prior preparation prevents poor performance."
I've submitted everyone's 2010-2011 Curriculum Maps to Dr. Tolbert. Thank you for your work on these important planning documents.
If you are interested in serving on the CMS School Council as a faculty representative, please let me know this week. Faculty representatives serve two-year terms. Maintaining a school-wide perspective, they work with others on the Council to improve achievement and share ideas on school improvement.
CMS math teachers will participate in a full-day training on Friday, August 27 with Jared Robinson of Northeast Georgia RESA. Training will take place in the front office conference room.
English/Language Arts teachers will meet for collaboration on Thursday, April 26 at 3:00 in Mr. Bagwell's classroom.
Mrs. Maddox and I will begin scheduling CLASS Keys Professional Growth Plan (PGP) meetings this week. The meetings will begin upon our return from the Labor Day three-day weekend. Please use your self-assessment and other reflective information/data to determine the 2-3 goals you will pursue this year.

It has been a wonderful first week of school and I would like to thank our teachers, staff, students, and parents for working to make it so successful. It was nothing short of amazing to stand in our school building, five minutes before the tardy bell on opening day, and find that the hallways so surprisingly quiet and clear of traffic. Over 400 students and their teachers were already in place, in their assigned classrooms, beginning the teaching and learning processes that will continue through next May.

During Pre-Planning Week, in their initial collaboration meetings, all of our school's teaching teams agreed on the importance of developing strong study skills among our students. There are lots of excellent resources available for teachers and parents to use for the purpose of bolstering students' study skills. One was shared with me today that I believe can be helpful to all CMS students, regardless of their grade level. I encourage you to check out the Study Skills Tip Sheet provided by Robyn R. Jackson of Mindsteps, Inc. I hope to share other organizational and study skills resources with you throughout the year on The Principal's Page.

During the first week of school we seek to establish the kind of learning environment that will ensure optimum teaching and learning. Part of that process is discussing expectations with students and reviewing policies and procedures. We would like to thank Officer Max Briggs and Officer Jeff Rogers for meeting with CMS students throughout the week to share important information and offer their ongoing help and support.

A new school year always brings a sense of excitement. These opening days have also brought a strong sense of enjoyment and optimism. I couldn't be more pleased!

The syllabus is an important form of positive communication between the teacher, students, and parents, and ensures everyone is “on the same page” regarding policies, procedures (including the grading process), and expectations. I would like to have a copy of everyone’s syllabus, and ask those who haven’t already, to send me an electronic copy or pass a hard copy on to Dannette Flint.

q Guided Study begins immediately. Guided Study is a key component in our school’s system of academic interventions and fits well with our standards-based approach to teaching and learning. Administered by our Connections teachers, students work on completing or redoing homework, classwork, quizzes, or other assessments during this time. This intervention confirms to our students that completing assignments and doing quality work is not an option and that less than quality work will be brought up to standard. Please work within your teams to make optimal use of Guided Study time.

q Co-teaching is an integral component of our school’s efforts to provide all students with the education they are entitled to. With the new school year underway, all co-teaching teams should be establishing how each teacher will assume active instructional roles in the classroom. We will soon meet with all co-teaching teams to discuss progress and challenges, and begin the process of providing the ongoing instructional support necessary for student success in those classes.

Our Partners in Education Program is a vital program in which many local businesses and organizations have formed partnerships with Commerce City Schools to work with faculty, parents, and staff to enrich the education of students. The program has provided strong volunteer support for our schools. The human resource, financial and "hands-on" support received from the participating business community contributes significantly to instructional programs, teacher and student recognition, and school-community projects.

The Tanger Outlet Center continues to be one of our strongest business partnerships. As a result of this ongoing partnership, Commerce Middle School recently received a check in the amount of $1020.00 to be applied to the school’s instructional program. We express our sincere appreciation to Mark Valentine and the Tanger Outlet Center for their continued involvement in public education.

2010-2011 Commerce Middle School Dress Code

Below is the Commerce Middle School Dress Code for the 2010-2011 school year. Please contact the school if you have any questions.

Commerce Middle School acknowledges that good grooming and personal attire positively affect student achievement and conduct. Commerce Middle’s dress code is designed to reduce the likelihood of distraction or disruption and to maintain an academic focus in the classroom and on campus. Students will be expected to observe modes of dress, styles of hair and personal grooming that support the learning atmosphere at our school.

If in the judgment of an administrator or a member of the staff, a student is dressed inappropriately, the parent will be called to bring the student appropriate clothing. A record of dress code violations will be kept and consequences assigned for repeat violations of the CMS Dress Code.

Clothing should be fitted so that there is no midriff or underwear showing when standing, bending, seated, or moving. All pants must be worn at the natural waistline. All clothing should be clean, in good repair, and shall have no holes, slashes or rips above the knees. Sagging pants (worn below the waistline) will not be permitted. If belts are worn, they must be buckled. Zippers must be zipped, and fasteners must be fastened.

Shirts, blouses, and tops, which naturally fall no longer than 12 inches above the knee (approximately to the first knuckle of the thumb), do not have to be tucked in. Any shirts, blouses, and tops beyond this length must be tucked in. School team jerseys worn on games days are not required to be tucked in. All other sport jerseys falling no longer than 12 inches above the knee are not required to be tucked in.

The following items of clothing are not permitted:

· Outer clothing which resembles pajamas or underwear

· Tank tops and shirts with spaghetti straps or very narrow connectors over the shoulder

· Midriff tops and low-cut tops

· Sleeveless shirts for males

· Miniskirts and short shorts – Shorts and skirts must be longer than mid-thigh length. Mid-thigh length is defined as a maximum of 6” above the knee of the wearer or not above the fingertip of the wearer with the arm fully extended, whichever is longer.

· Hats, caps, bandannas, doo rags, skull caps, head wraps or any other kind of head covering.

· Curlers, combs, sunglasses and metal chains

· Apparel that is extremely tight fitting including spandex.

· Bedroom shoes

· Clothing/jewelry with profanity, vulgarities, or other offensive language, references to alcohol, tobacco, or drug use, gangs, weapons, or sexually suggestive items

· Clothing/jewelry (including wallet chains) that could be used as a weapon

· Body piercing (in which the body is punctured and decorated with a ring or piece of jewelry that attaches in a similar fashion as an earring) for either sex will be restricted to the ears only. All other visible body piercing (nose, lips, eyelid, etc.) will not be allowed. Body piercing of the tongue will not be permitted.

· Extremes in hairstyles and hair colors are not permitted as (determined by the Administration).

Principal discretion applies to all of the above. If any unusual situation relative to dress, accessories, or grooming arises which is not specifically covered in this policy, the school principal shall have the authority to rule on the appropriateness of the attire.

2010 Spring Concert

On Tuesday, May 11, our school community was treated to a special evening of music featuring the Bands and Chorus of Commerce Middle School. The annual Spring Concert was a great success and also gave everyone the opportunity to recognize and admire the work of long-time Band Director Jack Balthazor. Mr. B is bringing a 30-year career as a music educator to a close this year. He has worked in Commerce City Schools for 18 years, and has directed the bands at both Commerce Middle School and Commerce High School.

Highlights of the evening included The Hey Song by the Beginner Band, Surfer Medley by the Concert Band, I Can't Help Falling in Love by the Chorus, and two songs performed by Mr. B's family-based band known as Healing Flow. Congratulations to all students who performed in the concert, and a big congrats to Mr. B on a great show and a tremendous career in music education.

CMS Softball Announces Summer Practice and Tryout Dates

Upcoming practice dates for girls interested in playing softball for Commerce Middle School have been set for July 19, 20, and 22 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tryout dates will be July 26-30 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. except for Wednesday, July 28 from 4:00 until 5:30 p.m.

Attendance at tryouts is mandatory. All athletes must have a physical on file before participating in practices or tryouts. If you have any questions, contact Coach Pam Canup or Coach Barry Cook at Commerce High School.

We finished our third day of CRCT testing today. Teachers and staff have been very impressed with the focus and effort our students have shown throughout the week. We will resume testing next Tuesday, April 27 (Science) and finish on Wednesday, April 28 (Social Studies).

Monday Message to Teachers and Staff - "We are Ready!"

At Commerce Middle School, we often talk about leaving nothing to chance in our efforts to improve student achievement. Tomorrow we begin CRCT testing and I have reflected a great deal on the quality of teaching and learning that has taken place at our school this year. Our focused plans of improvement and ongoing efforts to assess and monitor the performance of our students and ourselves have resulted in a level of unquestionable readiness. Just like the past two years, with great confidence I can exclaim, “We are ready!”

Beyond the test administration procedures discussed at last Wednesday’s general faculty meeting, it is essential that on CRCT test days, our school (and individual classroom) environments be positive and upbeat, while maintaining a businesslike approach to the task-at-hand. It will serve us well to give attention to the smallest of details throughout the testing periods. You know your students very well. From test-anxious students to those who seem to be less than focused, please be prepared to work positively through issues in a situational fashion. What works with one student may have little or no effect on another. Group-wise, powerful phrases such as “You are prepared,” or “I believe in you” are sure to have a positive impact on any student. Thank you for avoiding topics that have negative connotations such as “If you fail this test, you may not be promoted.”

We have talked a great deal about test-taking tips and strategies and I know from your work with students, they will be able to approach each exam in a test-wise manner. Keep in mind that your classroom environment can be optimized in many ways. Instructional materials that may prompt student responses should not be visible in your classrooms. But, please remember that your room is full of concealed information that should remain in place. Leave your concept maps and instructional posters up, but simply turn them around so that the printed information is not visible. Suggest to your students that they may visualize what was on the boards and walls to trigger their memories. Tell them also that you are covered with invisible information and that they can look at you and remember the concepts and skills you shared with them.

Sitting in any chair for more than a short interval is likely to have negative effects on anyone. I strongly recommend that you engage your students in movement at appropriate times during the testing periods. At minimum, have them stand and stretch a bit before beginning their test, and have them move around during the break (10 minutes is allotted this year). If you want to take it a step further, have them take part in some arm or leg crossover activities that force both hemispheres of the brain to “talk” to each other. “The left arm pats the right shoulder” or “Pat your head and rub your belly.” Other activities may include marching in place while patting opposite knees, or touching opposite elbows or heels.

Lastly, thank you in advance for continuing to emphasize the time factor on each test day. There is more than enough time for every student to fully complete each of the CRCT tests. We don’t need any speed-testers! With the time that is alloted, students should be using the strategies you’ve taught them to review and rank questions (:), +, ?), and should be double checking all answers, especially on the questions they considered to be easy. Above all, remind them that just having a strategy is important and that effectively using the strategy can make a big difference for them. I will also reemphasize next week in my announcements that, “It is okay to be the last one done!”

Regardless of how we feel about standardized tests—what they measure and don’t measure, or their deficiencies or consequences—as educators, we are obliged to do what is necessary to prepare our students for the tests. You have done a remarkable job in doing exactly that! With confidence, you can exclaim, “WE ARE READY!”

Commerce Middle School Named as Finalist for Technology Grant

It was announced today that the Windstream Corporation has selected 34 schools as finalists for the company's Classroom Connections program. Commerce Middle School has been declared one of the finalists. The program provides financial awards for technology-related upgrades in public schools throughout the company's service area. $150,000 will be awarded this year.

Windstream received 120 applications from schools in 15 states. Public and public charter schools were eligible to apply online and were required to submit a video with their application. The finalists selected were schools that best demonstrated need, creativity and enthusiasm for the program.

Congratulations to all the students and staff who devoted a great amount of time and effort to the application and video production process. Thank you and appreciation to Mrs. Kathy Cobb, Business Education Teacher, Dr. Joy Tolbert, Assistant Superintendent, and Mr. Toby Jones, Technology Specialist. Final selections for grants and awards will be made in May.

Message to Parents and Community - State CRCT Testing Begins Next Week at Commerce Middle School

The Commerce Middle School Educational Team has established some very challenging student performance goals for this year’s Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT). A great deal of time, effort, and focus has been devoted to preparing our students for the CRCT and placing them in a position to meet and exceed state proficiency levels on each of the five tests. If we wish to continue meeting the criteria associated with “Adequate Yearly Progress,” our school-wide CRCT test scores will need to show continued improvement. Students will take each of the CRCT tests between Tuesday, April 20 and Wednesday, April 28. We will not test on Friday, April 23 or Monday, April 26. As we finalize our preparations for these tests, parents can assist us in meeting our goals in the following ways:

1. Be sure your child arrives at school on time. Rushing and worrying about being late can affect performance on the test.

2. Be sure your child gets plenty of sleep and has a good, nourishing breakfast.

3. Let your child know that you consider the tests important and that his/her very best effort is important.

4. Emphasize reading directions carefully, avoiding careless errors, and reviewing test answers when completed.

5. Reassure your child that there will be ample time to take the tests and that it is okay if he/she doesn’t know every answer.

6. Ask your child about the testing at the end of each day.

We are excited about the many successes taking place every day at Commerce Middle School. Our faculty and staff have challenged students to excellence on this year's CRCT. Thank you so much for providing encouraging support to your child as they prepare for these high-stakes tests.

Trash Into Treasure Contest for CMS Students

Commerce Middle School is proud of its active business partnership with Tanger Outlets. We value the many contributions they make to our school and we encourage our students to participate in the Second Annual Trash Into Treasure Contest to have fun, express creativity, and help the environment.

In an effort to better our community and our world, Tanger asks that each student create an artwork out of recyclable materials to be displayed in our Green Gallery April 22nd – May 9th. All items must be submitted no later than April 16th. A $50 gift card will be awarded based on individual works for the following categories:
K – 2nd grade
3rd – 5th grade
6th – 8th grade

H1N1 Flu Still a Concern

Now is not the time to drop our guard on H1N1 vaccinations, said state officials from the Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH) at a press conference yesterday at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston Hospital. Currently, Georgia is one of five states that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) list with regional influenza activity. While seasonal flu usually runs from October through May, H1N1 is still circulating and may continue for many months. Final Benchmark Assessments Continue - To measure levels of student learning, and in preparation for the upcoming CRCT, final benchmark assessments will be administered this week in science and social studies classes. As we plan and prepare for the final two weeks of state test preparation, we will look closely at the student performance data associated with these assessments. Benchmark results for all subject areas/grade levels should be turned in to me by Thursday, April 1. School-wide results will be posted on April 2.

Academic Olympics This Week - All students will be participating in the CMS Academic Olympics this Thursday and Friday. The Academic Olympics consist of a series of events combining academic and athletic challenges to teams of students. Teams compete in the gymnasium during their scheduled Connections classes, and a championship team is announced at the end of the second day for each grade level. With assistance from other Connections teachers, Mrs. Tonya Ladd organizes the Academic Olympics, and academic teachers from each grade level participate in the games. Parents and community are invited to come see the excitement on April 1 and 2.

Sweet Sixteen To Be Announced This Week - As part of our "CRCT Countdown to Success," students qualify for $50.00 cash prizes based on the quantity and quality of their efforts in the Classworks labs before and after school. This week, we will announce the 16 students who are leading the chase for these awards. The Final Four will be announced the week after Spring Break, and the winners announced during CRCT Week.

Encouraging Bell-to-Bell Attendance - It's a fact that students who attend school regularly learn more and are more successful in school than students who are not. Board policy establishes that students who miss more than 15 days of school during the year may be retained. As we approach CRCT Week (April 20-28), every minute of class time is more important than ever. Thank you to teachers and parents for reminding students of the importance of regular school attendance. All students who have attended every minute of every class during our "CRCT Countdown to Success" will qualify for awards.

Tools for Teachers - Integrate to Differentiate: A great site for teachers seeking strategies and resources related to differentiated instruction. The strategies are organized alphabetically and are among the best I've seen. The site also provides a great amount of other resources including various learning styles inventories. Listhings: A free online dashboard to easily create and edit your personal notes. You can use it to save temporary notes and manage to-do lists online.
